What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus?
John 1:35-42 New
International Version - UK (NIVUK)
35 The next day John was there again with two of
his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by,
he said, ‘Look, the Lamb of God!’
37 When the two disciples heard him say this,
they followed Jesus. 38 Turning round, Jesus saw
them following and asked, ‘What do you want?’
They said, ‘Rabbi’ (which means ‘Teacher’), ‘where are
you staying?’
39 ‘Come,’ he replied, ‘and you will see.’
So they went and saw where he was staying, and they
spent that day with him. It was about four in the
afternoon.
40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the
two who heard what John had said and who had followed
Jesus. 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find
his brother Simon and tell him, ‘We have found the
Messiah’ (that is, the Christ)42 And he brought
him to Jesus.
Jesus looked at him and said, ‘You are Simon son of
John. You will be called Cephas’ (which, when
translated, is Peter).

What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus?
John 1:35-42, 2 Timothy 2:2
A. They saw v36 1 John 1:1-3
gazed intently, beginning and end of all Discipleship:
to reproduce life of teacher in the student: the lamb
life, servant King, sacrifice at heart of Good news.
John 1:14 captivated, curiosity
Eternity is for us to become like Jesus and discover God
B. They followed v37
cf
Matthew 4:20 'Immediately'- this is what God is looking
for, people who are hungry and thirsty to know and to
learn.
C.
They stayed v39
This is the Key-to remain with Him. Use our time well
D.
They shared v41
We
must pass it on, multiply. Go and share it!
E. They listened v42
Note Jesus' positive, upbuilding words. He calls
Peter-a rock instead of the unstable water like man that
he was at times.
Jesus can transform anyone who lets Him. |
